Chapter 37 - The Stare Into The Darkness - Part 1

As Fifi lays there on the bed; staring at the blank screen on the telly, when there's a knock at the door. Turning to her right in the best way she possibly can, she sees Alex and Maddie slowly walking in and they greet her with smiles although she can tell their only half-hearted for her sake. She too fakes a small smile. Fifi watches them as they sit down either side of her.

"This is a nice room isn't it, lucky you Fifi. Guess it has it's perks being connected to pop stars ha ha!!"

"Gotta take some advantages when it's needed! That nurse seems nice, baby?!"

"Hmm... Yeah she is."

"So, how long will you be here for?"

"Don't know."

"Do you mind Alex, if I nip to get a quick bite to eat? I haven't eaten since I got home."

"Yeah, I'll stay here with Fifi."

"Want me to get you anything?"

"A drink please, Maddie."

"Be right back."

Maddie walks out, closing the door behind her. Fifi continues to stare at the telly like she was before and Alex tries to switch it on for her. He tries to make small talk and she gives him short replies, not really feeling up to talking much. Eventually, he sits just staring at the telly screen. She side glances at Alex and feels sick, it really is the last thing she feels like talking and is relieved when he stops talking.
When Maddie goes over to see Nick, who is still by himself; staring out of the window. She notices his neck is a little red and his eyes are slightly puffy.

"Hey, Mr Crazy. Want to come with me down to the refectory for something to eat?"

"Yeah, okay. How's Fifi?"

"Not saying much, guess she's just tired out. They're planning on keeping her in overnight, I think."

"D'ya think she'll be okay?" "I presume so."

"Do you think it's okay if I stick around? I'll wait out here though until she's up to more visitors."

"Don't feel you have to stay though, Nick."

"I want to. I care about her and wouldn't be able to chill until I know for myself she's okay."

"Aw, you're sweet. Are you alright?"

"Will be once she is."

They are now half way down to where the refectory is. Maddie can see how worried Nick is about Fifi and that he cares more than he lets on. Her phone starts to ring ad she answers it, knowing it is Harry, who's checking on Fifi is and making sure Maddie is looking after herself. Nick went ahead to browse while she is busy talking. A part of Nick just wants to go cruising in his car, getting hammered but knows deep down that that is the last thing Fifi would want him to do. This time, he needs to stick it out and suck it up.
Upstairs in her room, there's a slight awkwardness filling the air making Fifi feel uncomfortable but she is glad Alex is there so she's not on her own. How would he feel and react if he found out the truth, this thought crosses her mind over and over, countless times. He's just getting his life back on track again and she desperately doesn't want him to take a step backwards after all of the progress he's been making. She realises she should have realises the possibility of her being pregnant, it all seems so obvious to her now, now when it's too late. Her heavy eyes begin to fill and she rubs them hard to stop the tears from falling. The pain in her tummy begins to appear and she cradles it with her hand. Alex is looking everywhere but at Fifi and he eventually checks to see if she's alright to which she just nods.

"Alex?"

"Yes, baby?"

"I'm sorry we have to cancel on the family thing."

"Don't worry, it can easily be rearranged for when you feel better. You just rest, okay."

He smiles her and then turns back to the telly. Making them both jump, they hear Maddie coming back into the room. She heads straight for the empty chair and asks the pair how they are.

"Sorry I had to leave, I really needed some food but now I'm full, tiredness has kicked in. Harry was asking how you are by the way, Fifi. Fifi, do you need anything like your pillows moving or for me to get the nurse?"

"I'll be okay."

A moment later, the nurse walks in with a blood pressure machine and parks it near the bed. She picks up the strap around Fifi's arm and places it on her. Fifi winces as it goes tighter. Next, Laura checks her temperature, using a device where you hold it just above the skin on the forehead. She feels for her pulse as the machine beeps occasionally.

"Okay, your blood pressure is a little high as is your temp and heart rate. How are you feeling at the moment?"

"I'm really sore, and struggling to get comfortable."

"I can give you some pain relief. Have you managed to get any sleep yet?"

"No... Not yet."

"I'll be right back, doll."

Laura puts everything back on to the little stand and leaves the room, but Alex goes after her. Once outside the room, he collars Laura.

"Do you know what's happening with Fifi?"

"At t
