The doctor and the radiographer are busy doing the ultrasound scan on Fifi. Fifi is feeling extremely anxious with everyone being so quiet and focused. She starts to panic when she sees exchanged glances between them and reaches out to get the nurse's attention. The nurse then holds her hand and sits quietu, forcing a reassuring smile.
"Fifi, please try to stay still petal."
"Is there something wrong?"
"Felicity. We will be back in a moment. Nurse can you please clean her up, thank you."
"Where are they going?"
"They just need to discuss the showings, don't worry they will be back. I just need to clean the gel off you so you're more comfortable."
With that, she then picked up some paper towels and cleaned Fifi up. She remained calm and made sure that Fifi is comfortable. Out in the waiting area, Alex finally shows his face and stars questioning Maddie and Nick about what was going on.
"What happened?"
"I found her unconscious on the bathroom floor. They're just doing loads of different tests on her. I was allowed to go in before for a short while."
"Oh god! I knew it! Did you not go in there Nick, bro?"
"No, thought it'd be best if Maddie went in along as she's been here since they brought her in."
"Oh right."
"I should have made her to go the doctor ages ago but we all know what she's like. Not like anyone fussing."
"Well hopefully, they'll get to the bottom of it all. Finally."
Seeing the doctor walking back towards her, she knew by instinct that whatever news he has, it's not good and she's not sure she can cope with more shocking news. He avoids eye contact fearing how his patient is going to react to what he is about to tell her. The doctor explains that the blood is clotting and haemorrhaging.
"Miss Felicity, I need to explain the results from the scan. It seems it's a little more complicated than we expected and that's why I have had to discuss it with fellow doctors."
"Okay, what do you mean by complicated?"
"I can definitely confirm a pregnancy, but I'm very sorry to say this... You have lost the baby. The other complication is that we have found a small lump inside."
"I... I've miscarried?!?" "Yes, I'm afraid so. I am very sorry."
Fifi starts to sob. "What about the lump?"
"We can remove it by keyhole surgery which will mean we have to admit you but we should be doing this anyway. At the same time, we will take a biopsy just to confirm there isn't any more nasty surprises."
"Oh, when will you do that?"
"Tomorrow, right now you should get plenty of rest. If you have any more questions, then p,ease let us know. The nurse here will arrange for you to be taken up to the ward, shortly. Is there anyone you'd like us to get for you?"
"Err, yes please. My friend, Maddie."
The nurse disappears leaving the doctor reading through the records. All three; Maddie, Nick and Alex look up when they see the nurse walking towards them.
"Maddie? Felicity would like to see you."
"What about these two? I'm sure she'd like to see these as well."
"Yes of course, but she will be going up to the ward soon and she needs to rest."
Nick stays behind as Maddie and Alex go with the nurse. He's staying still as he thinks it'll be too crowded and doesn't want to get in the way, although he's worrying sick about her. As Maddie and Alex see Fifi, they could see how exhausted she looks. She is surprised to see Alex and didn't know how to feel.
"Hey baby, I got so scared when Maddie told me you were rushed in here."
Alex went to give her a cuddle but she stayed still, motionless. He must have sensed this stiffness from her and backs away, letting Maddie get closer.
"So, you're going upstairs, I hear?" "Yeah, they're keeping me in."
Fifi manages to reach for Maddie's hand and is fighting hard to hold her tears from falling. Pain starts to surface again, and she squeals out. Maddie presses the buzzer and the nurse comes to check on her. The nurse took one look at Fifi and suggest that Alex and Maddie maybe go outside to let her sleep. They reluctantly got up and left. As they leave, Fifi manages to say 'sorry' focusing her attention on Maddie.
When they got out into the waiting area, Alex mutters about going for a smoke and for the other two to let him know of any change. Nick looks at Maddie confusingly.
"Fifi pretty much ignored him, she was really cold towards him. It was weird, poor guy!"
"Have they had a fight or something?"
"Nope, not that I know of. When I was in there before, she didn't say anything bad about him and now, god knows!"
The nurse is sitting with Fifi, trying to calm her down and support her through this traumatic time.
"I feel so... Lost. I feel bad."
